Literacies in place: teaching environmental communications
Literacies in Place* looks at the way students communicate knowledge when they build their learning around places and spaces that have meaning to them. SHEC's work features in Chapter 6 of this book.

International River Health Conference: 2007
In 2007, SHEC attended the MDBC International River Health Conference [photos included], and presented 'Mission Possible' - a 40 minute creative presentation exploring 4 separate locations within the Murray Darling Basin. This took the form of a fictional 'through-the-eyes' account of a character from each area. This was designed to highlight the problems and solutions in regard to river health.
Mayors' Water Prize: 2004
The Primary School category was taken out by Sacred Heart Primary in Mildura, for their submission “Water Smart, That’s A Start”.
The entry was devised and prepared by students involved in the Sacred Heart Environmental Committee (SHEC), outlining tangible and practical ways for their school to become waterwise.
The SHEC group organised a number of activities to promote water saving measures throughout the entire school community, and plans to hold a “Water Smart, That’s a Start” Day in Term 3 or 4.

You no doubt will have heard, on numerous occasions, people talking about how "green" can be "good for business". Is it really that obvious though? Would you think of this as a day-to-day reality, or does it seem like hot air and dry theory? What if someone told you that an enormous car factory could be completely overhauled to not only be environmentally sustainable, but far more profitable than it was previously? Possible, surely, but not yet, right?

Israel: Cutting Edge Solar
When viewing the links below*, consider the fact that Mildura has 122 clear days per annum (for 77 of these the temperature exceeds 30 deg C). Consider, also, that Australia is the world’s hottest and driest continent, and that the CSIRO is predicting increases in both these features.
Thus far, “fantastic solar technology” [00:24:40 - 00:25:20] opportunities have passed Australia by, despite our researchers being world class. This is obviously an inefficient situation. Meanwhile, Germany, for example, leaves us in the dust. Where is the mass investment? Where is the vigorous public debate on cutting edge renewable energy technologies?

Solar Nanotechnology: Ted Sargent
At present, solar panels are expensive to install and only work on sunny days. Professor Ted Sargent (University of Toronto) is working to change both these realities. In a recent interview with Mary Wiens, he provides a useful overview of a complex research* area - the interview can be accessed here.
SHEC is particularly interested, in light of a recent group viewing of Chris Paine's Who Killed the Electric Car?**, in the possible application of this technology to automobiles such as the EV1. We will be following this possibility closely, along with the general issues surrounding the electric car.
The potential of Nanotechnology, however, extends far beyond the realm of solar power research; Sargent's book, The Dance of Molecules: How Nanotechnology is Changing Our Lives, explores this wider potential - a sample chapter can be downloaded here.
